Why an "engineer's approval" is a professional obligation, not a recommendation


Many mistakenly think concrete cutting is ordinary renovation work, but in practice it is a structural change. Concrete walls contain reinforcement meshes and massive stresses that hold the building together. Uncontrolled cutting can lead to cracks in the frame, ceiling subsidence, and in extreme cases even collapse.

Engineering review and permitting before cutting: how we prevent risks

The engineer is the only qualified party to determine where cutting is allowed, what reinforcements are needed (such as supporting steel beams), and what the technical constraints are. Even Derech will never carry out structural cutting without a written sign-off from a licensed structural engineer.

Building permits

When is a building permit or local authority approval required?


The Planning and Building Law (Israel, Section 145) defines which works require a permit. As a rule, any action that changes the facade appearance, affects the structural frame, or alters floor area requires a licensing procedure.

Note: The Permit Exemption Regulations (2014) ease requirements in certain cases, but generally opening a door or window in an external or structural wall is not included in automatic exemption.

Mamad: why it is a different world


The mamad is designed as a single strong unit intended to protect its occupants from blast and shrapnel. Every hole or cut in the mamad's reinforced concrete weakens its protection level. Work in a mamad requires strict adherence to Home Front Command guidelines and the use of standard protective fittings after cutting (blast doors and windows).

Strict policy: We will not carry out cutting in a mamad without an orderly engineering file confirming that the room's protection level is maintained.

Load-bearing / supporting wall

A thick concrete wall that transfers the weight of the roof and upper floors to the foundations. Cutting it requires precision and care.

Concrete column

A critical vertical element. Cutting a column without support is an immediate collapse risk. Generally not recommended for cutting.

Beam

A horizontal element carrying the slab. Cutting a beam is a high-risk operation requiring complex engineering solutions.

Slab / floor

Cutting for stairs or light shafts. Requires placing temporary supports from below before cutting.

Work is carried out under third-party liability insurance and contractor works insurance, with coverage amounts that vary by project scope. It is worth knowing: work done without engineering approvals can void the policy and expose you to personal liability if the structure is damaged. That is why we do not skip the engineer's sign-off, even when a client is in a hurry.
